Dyed Shaving Cream Eggs

These beautifully colourful eggs can be hidden around the garden for Easter egg hunts, used to decorate your table over the Easter weekend or even as a tasty Easter day breakfast! You’ll need:
  • Shaving Cream
  • Food colouring
  • Baking tray
  • Eggs

Preparing the eggs

The first step is preparing the eggs. It will depend on how you want to use the eggs as to how you’ll need to prepare them. If you want to eat them as a special Easter breakfast, then you’ll need to hard boil them. Add them to boiling water and leave them to boil for 8-9 minutes, depending on how you like your eggs! Ensure they’re completely dry and cool before using them. If you’re not planning on eating the contents, you’ll want to remove the middle so it doesn’t break and get messy! Create a small hole in the top and a slightly larger whole the bottom of the egg using a drawing pin. Putting a piece of tape over the area as you create the hole can help to prevent the egg cracking. Insert a paperclip into the hole and wiggle it around to break up the yolk so it will come out of the hole. Alternatively, you could try vigorously shaking the egg - before creating the holes! Blow hard through the small hole in the top so the egg contents come out of the larger hole in the bottom. You can blow it into a bowl and use it to make scrambled eggs or omelette. Rinse the eggs shells in water and let them dry completely (usually overnight). dyed shaving cream eggs

Dyeing the Eggs

Once the eggs are prepared, you can move on to the fun part!
  1. Spread the shaving cream out on a baking tray in a reasonably thick layer.
  2. Dribble food colouring over it. The brighter the colouring, the better the final effect!
  3. Use a toothpick or the wrong end of a teaspoon to swirl the colours through the shaving cream.
  4. Roll your eggs or egg shells through the shaving cream. If you’re using blown egg shells, ensure you do it delicately so they don’t break! It can be a good idea to wear gloves to keep from dyeing your fingertips and over-mixing the colours in the shaving cream.
  5. Set the coloured eggs to the side to allow the cream and dye to dry for at least five minutes.
  6. Wipe off the shaving cream and rinse the eggs with water.
You’ll be left with colourful Easter eggs ready for the bank holiday celebrations! It’s a great activity to try with kids, or to make some simple and effective decorations for your home.   If you’re looking for high quality shaving cream, explore The English Shaving Company’s website.
