Not too long ago, The English Shaving Company brought you a guide to the best shaving creams with 7 of our favourite products. However, for the perfect close shave, a lot of men opt for shaving soap as they prefer the slightly different lathering quality and longevity of the soap. To tailor for every shave, we’ve put together our top 5 soaps to help you find the best shaving soap for your needs.
Shaving Soap vs Cream
Shaving soap and shaving cream both give much needed protection for your skin during a shave, providing lubrication to help the razor blade glide smoothly. When used with a shaving brush, they also help to lift the hairs away from your skin. Shaving soaps and creams moisturise and soften your hairs and ultimately give you a great shave.
The difference between shaving creams and soap is that cream can be applied without a shaving brush (although we would still recommend you use one) and it can take a little longer to whip up the perfect lather with shaving soap - although the results are worth it! Shaving soap is the more traditional option and provides a really luxurious feel to your shave. Hard shaving soap pucks tend to last longer than the equivalent amount of shaving cream too.
One great advantage of shaving soap is that it often comes in more environmentally friendly packaging than cream. While cream is frequently found in plastic tubes, shaving soap can be found in boxes or tins, or sometimes in plastic cases that can be reused and refilled when the soap runs out.
The Best Shaving Soap
Here, in no particular order, are our top 5 shaving soaps. They all create a beautiful, thick lather that makes your shave feel fantastic! When you’re looking for the best shaving soap, any one of these would be a strong choice. Our choices tend to change on a weekly basis, but we’re confident these picks will be sure fire winners.
1. OSP Barbershop Shaving Soap
OSP boast that their Barbershop OSP Soap is one of their top products, and for good reason. It’s made with a blend of tallow, coconut oil, and avocado oil which gives it extremely good moisturising properties. Unlike some soaps, they only use natural products, which are completely organic. This includes using essential oils over fragrance oils, providing a beautiful fragrance that doesn’t risk drying out your skin.
2. Le Pere Lucien Soap
Le Pere Lucien offer a range of shaving soaps, all of which are great at creating a soft and effective lather for a smooth shave. We picked this one out of their great range because it’s their best shaving soap for sensitive skin. Without any additional ingredients (it’s completely without fragrance), there’s very little in their to react with your skin and cause aggravation.
3. PannaCrema Nuavia Blu Shaving Soap
This is the ultimate shaving soap when it comes to multifunctionality without the loss of any luxurious and superior qualities. The PannaCrema Nuavia soap acts as a pre shave, post shave and, of course, shaving soap product that moisturises and protects your skin. The shave itself feels fantastic and the overall appearance of this soap is stunning. Presented in a ceramic pot and elegant box, it’s not only environmentally friendly, but also makes the perfect gift. Luxury par excellence.
4. Edwin Jagger Aloe Vera Shaving Soap
This shaving soap from Edwin Jagger definitely deserves the title of best shaving soap due to its rich and concentrated formula. It creates a wonderful shaving experience. The aloe vera provides extra moisturising properties and helps to keep the skin cool throughout the usually abrasive shave. There are also refill packs available so you don’t have to buy a whole new soap and container every time you’re done.
5. Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements Solstice Shaving Soap
It’s a bit of a mouthful, but the Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements soap is worthy of its long title. It provides a stunning quality of shave with fantastic lubrication and cushioning, but this is nothing compared to the fragrance! It’s a homage to Arizona history, culture, and life with twists of woody scents and spices. This is definitely one of the best shaving soaps.
