How To Remove Kinks In Beard Hair

Beard kinks and curls can be frustrating for many of us. Perhaps you’re getting ready for work and your beard just won’t stay put, no matter how much you try and tame it. Or every time you look in the mirror, you might see that one curl in your beard that you just want to cut off.

Before we begin, it’s important to note that curly or imperfect beards shouldn’t be chopped off completely. No matter how thick or in what direction your beard hair grows, there is always something you can do to remove kinks in beard hair and save your sanity.

If you’re finding curls and kinks regularly, it may be worth switching up your beard care routine and investing in a couple of handy products to keep your beard in place. Here are a few things you could try which are likely to work for any beard type.

Assess your diet.

Before you even think about products or daily beard care routines, you need to think about what you’re putting inside your body. The phrase, ‘you are what you eat’ is relevant here; if you eat healthily, your skin and facial hair will look and feel much healthier. A strong and healthy beard will help to reduce kinks in beard hair, or at least give you more to work with.

Start with a shower.

To refresh your beard (and the rest of your body!), try and make time each morning for a brisk shower to help yourself energise and wake. Around three times per week, you should wash your beard with a quality beard shampoo and conditioner. In doing so, your beard hairs will become softer and easier to control. There is the possibility of overwashing, so to prevent your skin and beard from drying out, use dedicated beard products and don’t overdo it. When you have a soft, dry beard, it’ll be easier to control those kinks and curls.

Use beard oils.

If you’re completely new to beard products, then choosing a beard oil or beard balm is a good place to start. Beard oil is good for thinner, easier to control beards but provides conditioning and shine to any type of beard. If your beard needs a little more taming, a beard balm or wax is probably the better choice. These products help to keep your beard in place and lower the chance of kinks occurring. Warm in your hands, then run a small amount through your beard to quickly see the effects. Use your own judgement to see if your beard requires more or less product.

Brush or comb your beard.

If your beard is naturally quite curly or you’ve grown it quite long, you can try and straighten it by brushing while it is still damp from the shower. After you’ve washed and conditioned your beard, pat it partially dry with a towel then use a quality beard brush to run through your beard. If it is particularly stubborn, you can use a balm or cream and even a hairdryer to help set your beard into the style you desire.

Change your sleeping position.

Even though your sleeping habits are difficult to control, it could be a key reason you may wake up with kinks and curls in your beard. As you turn over at night, try and remember to smooth your beard down to keep it tame. In the morning, wet your beard and comb it in the right direction. This will help to tame it and reduce the kink and curls over time.

Change the length of your beard.

If you have a medium length curly beard, you may want to consider cutting it for tamer facial hair which is easier to control. Growing your beard even longer can also help to eliminate any kinks or curls which have become frustrating. There is more you can do to style a longer beard and the weight of it can naturally straighten out any curls.
