Founded in 1906, Dovo Merkur are a German based company producing some of the most renowned shaving implements in the industry. The Merkur 38C DE Safety Razor (Closed Comb) is a traditional, waste-free double edge safety razor.

  • Overall length: 100mm

Closed comb style razors are the most popular type of double edge safety razor on the market. Closed comb refers to the fact the safety bar, aside from potentially having small grooves running along it, is relatively straight. This feature offers what is referred to as a ‘mild’ shave, one that restricts blade exposure but still offers a close and precise shave. The milder shave achieved makes it the perfect choice for those new to using a DE and the go-to for daily shaving for new and experienced shavers alike.

Merkur have long been respected in the shaving industry due to the many years of quality craftsmanship they use to create some of the highest precision razors on the market. This popular razor is a two-piece design, featuring a turning mechanism at the base of the handle that releases the screw rod, allowing any brand of DE razor blade to be placed between.

It is crafted with a solid brass core and finished off with chrome plating to ensure the quality of the product is of the highest standards and to guarantee the longevity of the razor. The attractive barber's pole style textured handle assists with wet grip and is reminiscent of traditional shaving styles.

This razor includes one Merkur Super Platinum DE Razor Blade to get you started. This blade fits neatly and comfortable in between the two head parts. These blades are known for their unparalleled sharpness that offer a glidingly smooth shave. All DE razor blades are a standardised size and shape and therefore any DE blades you purchase will be compatible with this razor.

To take the best care of your razor, clean the parts with warm water after with every blade exchange and use a soft nail brush if desired. Slightly lubricate the mechanical parts regularly and do not overwind any screws.

The product is presented in a thick cardboard box, featuring the classic Merkur branding for authenticity.

When you purchase a Merkur razor, you acquire a piece of the highest shaving culture for a cultivated start to the day.

Mekur 38C HD
Use this on my face and bald head, perfect razor size and weight (38C HD) I use feather blades, just let the weight of the razor rest on your skin ( no need to apply pressure) and it does all the work for you!

Decision time
After moving from using a straight razor back to a cartridge razor due to time it takes to straight shave before going to work I bought this razor to try to bridge the gap between straight shaving and cartridge razors.

Getting used to this razor was easy. It provided good initial results, close shave no nicks and faster than a straight shave.

Compared to the bog standard Mach Three, this razor is slower and requires multiple passes. Granted it's only one blade so two passes is still not the three that one pass of the Mach Three provides thus damaging the skin less. However I read reviews where people often do three passes so what's the difference?

Will I keep shaving with this razor? YES! Why? I think as for most men who shave this style or with straight razors it is about the skill that is used, it's about breaking the normal daily chore that is shaving. Also this razor looks great, it feels great. It's like driving a premier car compared to a standard car. It's not the fact that other cars can't do the job it's about how you feel doing it.

Nothing to be scared of
I have an Edwin Jagger and an old Gilette Slim Twist that I have started using again. The Mercury is different insofar as it is a two piece as opposed to three piece or butterfly opening razor. It is no longer than the slim twist. It is not unwieldy for anyone with normal size hands. The weight is not a problem.

So far it is easier to change a blade than on the Edwin Jagger where removing the old blade is an issue as the stem gets snagged between the base plate and the top and usually needs to be knocked out using the handle. It is not as easy as the slim twist where the razor does not need to be dismantled to change a blade. Slim twist now seems a bit lightweight though.

Shaving is fine using the Merkur. It is possible sometimes to twist the opening mechanism slightly in use though.

Anyway it is a useful razor to have. Individual preference will dictate which type of razor becomes your favourite.
