Founded in 1906, Dovo Merkur are a German based company producing some of the most renowned shaving implements in the industry. The Merkur 37C DE Safety Razor (Slant Head) is a heavyweight double edge safety razor.
- Overall length: 80mm
- Handle length: 63mm
- Weight: 85g
Slant head razors have a safety bar that sits at a slanted angle from the top cap. Rather than cutting hairs straight on this allows the blade to slice hairs at an angle, offering a guillotine style of shaving that produces a clean and efficient cut.
This feature offers what is referred to as a more ‘aggressive’ shave, one that allows for more blade exposure. This type of shave is ideal for those with coarser hair or experienced shavers who are more confident with their technique.
This razor includes one Merkur Super Platinum DE Razor Blade to get you started. These blades are known for their unparalleled sharpness that offer a glidingly smooth shave. All DE razor blades are a standardised size and shape and therefore any DE blades you purchase will be compatible with this razor.
The handle features an attractive cross hatch knurled patterning for enhanced wet grip. It ia a relatively heavyweight razor that is nicely balanced and a pleasure to use. It is described as being similar to the Merkur 34C DE Safety Razor (Closed Comb) but with the addition of a slanted blade exposure.
To take the best care of your razor, clean the parts with warm water after with every blade exchange and use a soft nail brush if desired. Slightly lubricate the mechanical parts regularly and do not overwind any screws.
The product is presented in a thick cardboard box, featuring the classic Merkur branding for authenticity.
Merkur have long been respected in the shaving industry due to the many years of quality craftsmanship they use to create some of the highest precision razors on the market. When you purchase a Merkur razor, you acquire a piece of the highest shaving culture for a cultivated start to the day.
Customer Reviews
- Shame about the quality

Plenty of reviews cover the ability of this razor. I use this and Feathers and they make a good combination for me. Every few years I have to replace it. The coating starts to break down and that’s the beginning of the end.Quality Price Value

Very aggressive razor. I like it because it's heavier. The shape of the slant makes shaving even more perfect. I recommend for all a little mor experienced

I'm an occasional (and lazy) shaver; roughly once a fortnight for a full shave with a couple of neck shaves in between, and I'd been using a Muhle R89 safety razor for quite a few years before the head snapped off mid-shave leaving me with a tense few minutes finishing my chin with my wife's leg razor.
I have thick facial hair combined with relatively sensitive skin, and I'd always thought I was rubbish at shaving, as it was a good shave if I only had a few cuts and my face only felt afterwards as though it'd been attacked by a couple of stray wasps rather than battered by a full swarm and queen.
On the basis of reviews talking about how slant razors cut better than straight razors thanks to the head angle and are more effective for irritable skin as they pull less on the hairs, I plumped for the Merkur 37C slant and I am over the moon that I did because teamed with Astra blades it does an absolutely beautiful job.
Shaving is quicker, easier, with a better finish and significantly less irritable, and now my face glows cleanly afterwards like I've been lying in the sun rather than lying with my face in a bucket of vinegar.
I can't recommend it highly enough.
I've read that beginners should be careful with the slant razors - I'm not sure I agree with that. The principle of slant or straight is almost identical and only takes a minimal amount of getting used to if you've recently moved over to safety razors - if anything, because this cuts better than my old straight safety razor there's less of an incentive to go at your face more aggressively.
I also like the head release screw located at the base of the shaft (the R89 had to be twisted from the head, which now and then resulted in sliced fingers).
(Thanks also to English Shaving Company for getting the razor so quickly to me during the pandemic lockdown, great service!)Quality Price Value
- Merkur 37 C
-
I used ~ 50+ DE razors, new and vintage, and for me, Merkur 37 C and 34 C are easy in very small circle of best all around razors of the all time.
37 C is very mild razor. In good way - for me. Old version was more like R41 Muhle.Quality Price Value
- Great quality from merkur
-
Quality build as always from merkur, decent weight and control is easy enough, this is an aggressive razor due to the slant bar design. Wouldn’t recommend for beginners, I would get the 34c, but for people more experienced you need this razor. Very good for sensitive skin as less passes are required to get a good result!

- Irritation Free Shave.
-
Well built, attractive razor which is nicely balanced and manoeuvrable. Very easy to use giving a mild, smooth, irritation free, yet efficient shave. It’s often recommended that it is a razor for experienced DE shavers, I’ve only been DE shaving for 5 weeks and I had no difficulty using it and experienced no nicks, in fact I found it easier to use than my Muhle R89 (a recommended beginner’s razor).

- Great razor, close shave with a single pass, small handle
-
Efficient, close shave that is not difficult, short handle takes some getting used to.

- great little razor

I'm relatively new to DE shaving and my other razors include Gillette slim adjustable and the Qshave Futur clone. Decided to start off with milder blades and have used Derby and Sharks so far with this. Finding the 37C not aggressive (roughly comparable to a 3.5 on the Qshave with the same blade) though is very effective and smooth. Quality construction, nice weight and balance and although slghtly short handle, you'll quickly adjust to. Looking forward now to see how a permasharp blade performs.

- Effective razor
-
Disclaimer: this is my first and so far only slant. My basis for comparison are two DEs with safety bar and one with an open comb.
The 37c is very effective, yet feels mild. The build quality is good, I just wish it were a three-piece as I find the base plate harder to clean if it's connected to the handle.Quality Price Value
- A shaving Ferrari
-
Wawoo! Is "agressive" synonym of "quick and efficient"? If so then yes, this is an agressive razor (especialy when combined to Merkur blade included). I would recommend it to everyone (unless, without knowing I master all shaving techniques after one year of wet shaving). Last but but not the least - the packaging : yes, it's simple, it's made of paper and it's eco friendly. Period (definitely can not understand those criticizing it's not made of gold or plastic: I would be happy with a simple paper bag).

I am a total novice with safety razors, so I was of course a little apprehensive about buying the 37c, but all my fears were layed to rest after taking my time and being careful. This is an exceptional piece of kit, the weight, build and results of the shave from this little beauty is top draw and I would highly recommend for beginners and experts without a second thought.

- Good Razor

Many reviews say this razor is aggressive, in truth, it just goes the job more efficiently and feels a lot less aggressive than a Futur or Gillette Slim but seems to do the job well on coarse growth without being catchy or causing burn or rash.

- Mild and effective slant bar razor.
-
This is my 3rd Merkur razor but 1st ever slant bar razor. What can I say - it very mild, very comfortable, but really effective in terms of shaving, very good razor, next step is to try some different blades with it :)

- Perfect if you don't mind a DE with a short handle
-
A smooth shave without the nicks, cuts and razor burn. If you have used "aggressive" razors like the R41, you will appreciate this. Do note that the Merkur 37C has a short handle so those with above average hands might need some time to adjust.
