A man with a thicker beard than most First things first, everyone is different and unfortunately we don’t have any products that’ll make hair grow where it doesn’t already. Some men choose instead to dedicate their time towards mastering the close shave. However, while there isn’t a miracle cure, we do have some tips to help you get a thicker beard.

A Thicker Beard Takes Time

When you’re trying to grow a thicker beard, the key ingredient is time. Especially when you first start to grow a beard, you can’t expect it to appear thick and beautiful in just a couple of weeks. The key is to take care of your hair while it grows by using beard oil, and to keep your hands away from the scissors! For the first two weeks, resist the urge to trim at all. In week three you can begin to keep the edges in check, but even at this stage, it’s best to simply let it grow. It’ll look patchy, but bear with it and its natural thickness will develop in time. It is worth pointing out that throughout the growing stages, it’s still important to maintain your neckline. Doing this helps keep your style in check, even during the awkward half-beard stage. As your beard grows, brushing it is a great way to help the hair grow in the right direction, which in turn makes it look fuller and smoother.

Hair Growth Products

There are many hair growth products out there and if you’re serious about getting a thicker beard, you’ve probably looked into them. However, there’s lots of debate around whether they actually work. We would recommend you use natural methods to promote beard growth and if you’re really struggling, perhaps consider embracing the way your body naturally grows hair. When it comes to hair growth products, there are two that are the most common.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil was originally used to treat high blood pressure, but people found that it also promoted hair growth. People speculated that this was because it increased circulation and therefore increased the amount of nutrients and hormones reaching your hair follicles. However, minoxidil has some side effects. It lowers blood pressure and can cause dry skin and weight gain.

Hair Growth Supplements

These are more of a natural solution than minoxidil. They tend to include vitamin C, Zinc, biotin and other vitamins. However, there’s a lot of debate around whether supplements are beneficial. There are claims that the vitamins are rarely absorbed by the body. Besides, with a balanced diet, you shouldn’t need supplements as your body already has enough of all the vitamins in order to grow thicker beard hair. With this in mind, we have some further tips that should help you to grow a thicker beard...

Diet & Exercise for a Thicker Beard

Diet

A good diet is key to growing a thicker beard. Like the rest of your body, your beard needs good nutrients in order to grow and stay healthy. If you eat a balanced diet, you’re giving your beard everything it needs to get thicker. Some key vitamins and nutrients to get a thicker beard are:
  • Vitamin A and Beta Carotene - these repair skin cells and therefore help hair to grow well.
  • Vitamin C and E - these promote the production of sebum which moisturises your skin and hair, helping your beard to stay healthy as it grows.
  • Biotin - promotes hair growth and rejuvenation of skin cells.
  • Protein - hair is made out of keratin, which is made out of amino acids, which are made out of protein. In order to grow strong and thick hair which isn’t brittle, you need protein.
  • Omega 3 - these fatty acids ensure your hair cell membranes are strong and prevent brittle hair. It therefore minimises shedding, which helps your beard to become thicker.
Swapping to a healthier diet can also help you to achieve a thicker beard as losing weight boosts testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for beard growth; if you have more testosterone, you’ll have a thicker beard.

Exercise

You might be surprised to hear that exercise can help you get a thicker beard, but it’s true. Not only does losing weight help you as mentioned above, but exercise also increases circulation. It’s thought to work in a similar way to minoxidil. Increasing circulation and lowering blood pressure increases the nutrients and hormones reaching your hair follicles and therefore promotes hair growth. Exercise also releases endorphins and reduces stress. Stress can limit the thickness of your beard because it increases cortisol levels in your body, which in turn reduces the amount of testosterone.   The key to getting a thicker beard is keeping your beard healthy. This comes in lots of different formats from using beard oil and combing, through to diet and exercise. However, the thickness of your beard is 85% down to your genes. If after following our tips, your beard still isn’t up to your high expectations, perhaps it’s time you embraced the clean-shaven look!
